1999 Friends of Washington Square receives a grant from Open Space Funds to improve the Playground
2000 Playground Uses / Users Survey - 300 neighbors are surveyed
2000 150th Anniversary Celebration on May 13th
2001 Marini Plaza and Golden Bear restoration
2002 Ordinances Sign posted – Lists activities prohibited in Washington Square
2003 Master Plan for Washington Square – funded by FWS
2006 Additional pole lights installed as a joint project with North Beach Merchants
2006 Joined S.F. Park Ranger Coalition to reinstate full-time Ranger Program
2008 Commissioned Tree Management Plan for the Park, which was donated to the Recreation and Parks Department and is now the management guideline for the square
2011 Planted seven new trees, of Asian origin, to celebrate the Lunar New Year. The new trees, Michelia doltsopa, are meant to symbolize the diversity of users of the park.
